MX-5 NB was the second generation of the Mazda Miata. In addition to an all you can eat buffet of factory options, it came in 17 distinct special and limited editions in the UK alone.
Mechanically, you could have ended up with almost any combination of:
- 1.6L NA engine (NB1)
- 1.8L NA engine (NB1 option)
- 1.8L NA VVT engine (NB2, Sequential Valve Timing)
- 5 speed manual
- 6 speed manual
- Open differential
- Torsen Type 2 differential
- Tochigi-Fuji aka Super LSD differential
- 3.6, 3.9, 4.1 or 4.3 rear end
- OEM suspension
- Sport suspension
- OEM brakes
- Sport or S-VT or “big” brakes
- Half a dozen different rim options
The more interesting ones were derived from the NB2, also known as NBFL (facelift) and MK2.5. The owners usually refer to the NB2 Sport ones as Sport/SVT/Big Brakes interchangeably, even though technically these mean unrelated things.
Facelift ones all run the 1.8L NA VVT engine. Some trims run bigger brakes and stiffer dampers. The latter were the biggest lottery, as depending on regional availability with suppliers, you could have ended up with slightly different dampers by different manufacturers depending on how that given week was going at the factory.
You also had multiple additional cross members and braces stiffening the chassis compared to the NB1. The 5-speed vs 6-speed gearbox was a trim option, as well as the LSD. The exact LSD varied by year, and the Torsen one is widely regarded as good, while Fuji is often seen as underwhelming.
Finally, there was a turbo version of this car produced, known as the Mazdaspeed MX-5 NB, but they are not very common.
This mod targets a NB2 Sport / S-VT / Big Brakes trim. Since I personally owned a UK one for a few months, I used that as a visual reference.
A drift spec is coming later with different visuals and more selectable mechanical options.
